When Your Root Chakra Feels Unbalanced: Finding Your Way Back to Grounding
Have you ever had one of those periods where you simply don’t feel grounded?
Perhaps your mind is constantly racing. You feel unsettled, disconnected or unable to properly relax. You may find yourself worrying about the future, craving stability or feeling as though you’re moving through life without really feeling present in it.
Within chakra traditions, these feelings are sometimes associated with an imbalance in the Root Chakra — Muladhara.
Located at the base of the spine, the Root Chakra is considered the energetic foundation of the chakra system. It is associated with security, stability, belonging, grounding and our connection to the physical world.
When we nurture our Root Chakra, the intention is to create a stronger sense of being safe, supported and firmly rooted in the present moment.
🌿 What is the Root Chakra?
The Root Chakra is the first of the seven main chakras and is traditionally associated with:
❤️ Colour: Red
🌍 Element: Earth
📍 Location: Base of the spine
✨ Themes: Security, stability, grounding, home, belonging and physical connection
🪨 Crystals: Red Jasper, Black Tourmaline, Smoky Quartz, Hematite and Obsidian
Think of the Root Chakra as the roots of a tree.
The deeper and stronger the roots, the more securely the tree can stand when everything around it changes.
In the same way, Root Chakra practices encourage us to create a strong energetic foundation before focusing on growth, transformation and the higher chakras.
Signs Your Root Chakra May Feel Unbalanced
In spiritual and energy-healing traditions, an unbalanced Root Chakra may be associated with feelings such as:
● Feeling anxious, unsettled or constantly “on edge”
● Difficulty switching off or being present
● Feeling disconnected from yourself or your surroundings
● Worrying excessively about security, money, home or the future
● Feeling as though life is chaotic or lacking stability
● Difficulty establishing routines or boundaries
● Feeling emotionally stuck or resistant to change
● A strong need to control situations in order to feel secure
Of course, feelings such as persistent anxiety or low mood can have many causes and deserve appropriate professional support when needed. Chakra work can be used as a complementary wellbeing and spiritual practice, rather than a replacement for medical or mental-health care.
So how can we begin creating a greater sense of grounding?
✨ Reiki & the Root Chakra
Reiki is a gentle energy-healing practice that can be incorporated into a Root Chakra ritual with the intention of encouraging relaxation, grounding and energetic balance.
During a Reiki session, particular attention may be given to the lower body and Root Chakra area while focusing on themes of stability and connection.
You can also create a simple self-Reiki moment at home.
Sit somewhere comfortable with both feet firmly on the floor. Take several slow breaths and place your hands wherever feels comfortable. Imagine a warm red light at the base of your spine.
As you breathe, visualise that red light becoming stronger and steadier.
Imagine roots extending from your body deep into the earth beneath you.
With each breath, repeat:
I am grounded.
I am supported.
I am present.
I trust the ground beneath me.
Spend a few quiet minutes simply allowing yourself to be still.
❤️ Working With the Colour Red
Colour can be a wonderfully simple way to bring intention into chakra practices.
Red is traditionally associated with the Root Chakra and represents strength, vitality, stability and our connection with the physical world.
You might introduce red into your day through clothing, flowers, candles, crystals or even small pieces of home décor.
During meditation, close your eyes and visualise a deep, warm red glow around the base of your spine.
Rather than thinking about what happened yesterday or what needs doing tomorrow, bring your attention back to one simple thought:
I am here, now.
🪨 Crystals for Root Chakra Grounding
Crystals have long been incorporated into spiritual practices as objects of intention and focus.
Some commonly associated with the Root Chakra include:
Red Jasper — traditionally connected with grounding, stability and strength.
Black Tourmaline — often used in spiritual practices for protection and creating a sense of energetic security.
Smoky Quartz — commonly associated with grounding and releasing unwanted or heavy energy.
Hematite — often chosen when the intention is stability, focus and connection with the physical world.
Black Obsidian — traditionally used for grounding, reflection and energetic protection.
Try holding your chosen crystal during meditation, keeping one beside your bed or placing it somewhere you will see it throughout the day.
Each time you notice it, use it as a little reminder:
Come back to the present moment.
🌿 Using Fragrance to Create a Grounding Ritual
Scent has an incredible ability to become associated with particular places, memories and rituals.
Creating a consistent fragrance ritual can therefore become a beautiful sensory signal that says:
This is my time to slow down.
For Root Chakra-inspired rituals, rich, earthy and warming fragrance profiles can work particularly well.
Think:
🌿 Sandalwood
🌳 Cedarwood
✨ Amber
🌶️ Warm spice
🌱 Patchouli
🤎 Soft woods
🌸 Deep, comforting florals
Our Root Chakra fragrance combines Sandalwood, Amber and Bergamot, creating a warm, grounding fragrance that can accompany meditation, Reiki or simply a few quiet moments at the end of the day.
Rather than expecting fragrance itself to “fix” an energetic imbalance, use scent to help create the environment and intention for your grounding practice.
Over time, simply smelling your chosen fragrance may begin to remind you that it is time to slow down and reconnect.
🌍 Don’t Forget the Simplest Grounding Tool — Nature
Sometimes we spend so much time searching for complicated rituals that we forget what is directly underneath us.
The earth.
Go outside.
Walk slowly.
Feel the ground beneath your feet.
Notice the temperature of the air, the movement of the trees and the sounds around you.
Put your phone away for ten minutes and allow yourself to experience where you actually are.
Grounding doesn’t always need to be elaborate.
Sometimes it is simply about returning to the moment you’re already living.
🌙 A Simple Root Chakra Evening Ritual
Create a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed.
Light a candle or use your favourite grounding fragrance. Place a piece of Red Jasper, Smoky Quartz or Black Tourmaline nearby.
Sit comfortably with your feet touching the floor.
Take five slow breaths.
Visualise a deep red light at the base of your spine, growing warmer and steadier with every breath.
Imagine roots extending down through your feet and deep into the earth.
Then ask yourself:
What would help me feel more grounded right now?
Don’t force an answer.
Simply sit.
Breathe.
Listen.
Finish your ritual with the affirmation:
I am grounded. I am supported. I belong here. I release what I cannot control and return my energy to the present moment.
🌿 Coming Back to Yourself
We live in a world that constantly encourages us to move faster.
More notifications. More responsibilities. More things to think about.
Root Chakra work offers us something different.
An invitation to slow down.
To reconnect with our bodies, our homes, nature and the present moment.
Whether you choose Reiki, crystals, colour, fragrance, meditation or simply a quiet walk outside, your grounding ritual doesn’t have to be perfect.
It simply needs to give you permission to stop rushing for a moment.
Because sometimes finding balance isn’t about adding something else to our lives.
It’s about remembering to come back to where we already are.
